This house was built 1978 in Skowhegan Maine. It was built with the concept of passive solar energy in mind. There are many windows facing south as you can see by the photos. There are 12 inches of insulation in the ceiling and 12 in the floor. There are 6 inches the walls facing south but the entire north and east walls are double studded with 12 inches of insulation in them. The foundation is a series of concrete pads with concrete posts. The house is very efficient and we burn only 2 cord of wood in addition to the highly efficient Monitor heater that burns K2 fuel. On sunny days one need not use any fuel even in winter. There is a Dish mounted on the house for TV and a phone modem but high-speed cable will be coming to the area soon. DSL is as near as 5 miles away in Canaan.
The house has 4 bedrooms a loft kitchen 2 living rooms one bathroom and one laundry room. The kitchen has red oak hardwood floor one living room has wide pine board floor and the other living room has a maple floor. The bedrooms have pine floors except for one having maple. The kitchen has very wide pine board as wainscoting. There is carpet only in the loft. The stairs are oak. The bathroom has Italian tile on the floor and a tiled bath/shower area. The moon/sun motif around the shower wall consists of hand made Mexican tiles. There is a small antique corner sink with small blue tiles framed with dark African wood. The toilet is a Kohler energy saving unit. The kitchen cabinets are pine with a combination of pine and cherry doors. A local cabinetmaker Roy Slamm made glass/cherry doors. The sideboards are black Formica with a cherry trim. There is a kitchen island with a built in dishwasher and the top is blue Formica. The gas cooking stove refrigerator and washer/dryer are all included. There is a pull out hardwood cutting board also. There is a closet in each bedroom and one in the kitchen for coats.
There is a deck on the outside with built in benches. There is a metal roof and a drilled well of 124 ft or so. There is also a dug well but we have only used it in times of emergency. The hot water tank is connected to another tank so that when one is burning wood the hot water is free of cost. The water never goes into the hot water heating tank cold; it goes into the other tank first. There is tubing in the wood stove that cycles to the tank thus wood heated hot water. When one is not burning wood of course the hot water tank heats it.There is a septic tank and leach field and one need only have the tank pumped once every 5 years. We had this pumped in September 2006. There is a garden area with very rich black soil that we have built up over the years. There is a dirt road that is seasonal..leading to the cabin in the back of the property. It is an octagonal building and a shed roof addition. It also has south facing windows. This structure has only a hand pump and dug well for water and an outhouse. There are 3 power poles on the road going up to the back cabin but would need one or two more in order for electricity to be installed.
There are 34 acres and it is primarily wooded. One can see deer on a regular basis on this land. Sometimes they come to eat from the garden and lawn. We have also seen moose and rabbits in the back woods. Both houses would make perfect hunting lodges. Taxes are 1200.00 per year.
